Latvian court imposes penalty for sanction violations in the tourism sector
03.10.2022
On September 30, 2022, specialists from the Financial Intelligence Unit (FIU Latvia) led the lesson “light profits - a damaged future, or how young people fall into the trap of fraudsters” for students of Valmiera Tech studying to be programmers and accountants.
The activity of financial criminals has increased during the pandemic and efforts to engage young people in them have intensified, therefore FIU Latvia is educating young people about financial crimes, risks and actions to avoid them in the “Know the (By)Ways of Money Laws” information campaign. More and more young people have become 'money mules' in recent years, helping fraudsters launder and move illegally obtained funds for a small fee.
During the lesson, FIU Latvia representatives discussed with students the most popular ways in which young people are recruited for financial crimes, drew attention to warning signs showing efforts to commit fraudulent acts and discussed the consequences for future life and careers of a young person's reckless actions and a desire to make easy and quick profits.
The “Know the (By)Ways of Money Laws” campaign has developed valuable materials - methodological materials for secondary schools that teachers can use to teach economic and business fundamentals, policies, rights and social sciences, as well as five educational videos explaining money laundering in a way that is understandable to young people and focus on types of fraudulent transactions.
